New Kids on the Block
By M.J. Shetron
When we bought our home in Port Charlotte on the Ackerman Waterway, we thought we were in heaven but we didn’t know anyone in Charlotte County, not to mention the entire state of Florida! We referred to ourselves as “New Kids on the Block” and began to assess how we could quickly become part of our neighborhood and make new friends with the same interests.
MJ joined a gym and began making new friends there. John began sailboat racing with the Punta Gorda Sailing Club where he began making friends and was frequently requested to join his team on sailboat racing day.
It has been six months now living in our new sailboat access home in Charlotte County, but we have made many new friends with interests similar to ours. It was tough at first to just go out and talk with strangers, however, by doing this we have quickly made friends in our Port Charlotte neighborhood AND are getting to know our Punta Gorda sailing club friends.
When moving into a new neighborhood and becoming the “New Kids on the Block”, we would recommend getting out there and inviting your neighbors over AND joining in the activities you enjoy to make friends. Southwest Florida is a lovely place to live and a great place to meet new friends!
