Punta Gorda means “fat point” or “broad point” in Spanish. Legend has it that in 1513 Ponce DeLeon named it because he first landed there at a broad part of land in Charlotte Harbor. Charlotte Harbor is where the Peace and Myakka Rivers meet and empty into the Gulf of Mexico.
Punta Gorda, the only city in Charlotte County, 100 miles south of Tampa between Sarasota and Ft. Myers. The city was founded in 1887. It has had an interesting history and has grown to be the center of the best boating in Florida. Money magazine has ranked Punta Gorda among the top 20 best places to live in America.
The city is situated on Charlotte Harbor. To the south and west are citrus farms and cattle ranches. Further inland begins the swamps that become the Everglades. The first city to the south is Fort Myers.

In the downtown section of Punta Gorda, brick and cobblestone streets welcome the visitor. Royal Palms and Hibiscus grace the streets. Punta Gorda is known as the City of Hibiscus for its abundance of these beautiful flowers.
