The Sarasota Chalk Festival is a ten-day cultural festival that celebrates all forms of street art and performance. Over 500 used the roadway as their canvas, creating 2D and 3D masterpieces for this years theme: “Circus City, USA.” This is a free event that accepts donations from visitors and does not sell space to vendors, but rather, promotes local businesses.
Murals and paintings of giant circus related material now cover the streets of downtown Sarasota, making it quite an amazing site that anyone (not just art lovers) can appreciate. During the Chalk Festival, the streets of Sarasota come alive with people, local businesses, and entertainers. This year, the folks from Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary were on scene and they brought along two fully grown tigers, an adult male lion and a female liger (a hybrid breed of a tiger and a lion). Guests could take pictures and even feed the animals (with a long pole), while learning valuable facts about these animals and the conservation efforts to increase the population of these endangered species.
The Chalk Festival also featured a performance stage for music, drama, dance, magic, and acrobatic performances. Visitors could also enjoy delicious food or a cold beer as they appreciated the artwork that lay before them.
The Sarasota Chalk Festival epitomizes the artistic culture of Sarasota. With so much creativity, generosity, and entertainment, the Chalk Festival is a fun time for all. And it is just another great perk to living in such an amazing city.
