Pilot training in Punta Gorda, FL set to begin. Western Michigan University flight training in Punta Gorda, FL starts in the fall of 2017. The university program is currently the third largest in the country and with this move, ready to grow larger. A collaboration with Florida SouthWestern State College will bring student pilots to the area.
Currently, the aerospace industry in the State of Florida is valued at over $40 Billion. WMU (Western Michigan University) will provide about 20 educational programs that will bring marketable skills to the community. These programs will enhance the Charlotte County work-force and spur economic growth.
To prepare for the influx of students and to house aircraft necessary to their education, WMU as refurbished a hanger at Punta Gorda Airport. By June of 2017 the director of flight safety and training should be in place. Also part if the project will be a flight operations center. WMU will begin installation of equipment in July. A flight simulator will be a contingent of the installation at a cost of over a half-million-dollars.
Pilot training in Punta Gorda will become a big deal for the area. The WMU and Florida SouthWestern State College program is the only four-year public university offering aeronautics training in Florida. Shortly, there should be eight airplanes for student training stationed at the Punta Gorda airport with as many as 50 students. It is expected that within a few years these numbers should double. Well over 90% of WMU College of Aviation graduates will work for commercial airlines.
