Sarasota County Schools have instituted “Meatless Mondays”. Only meatless meals will be served in the school cafeterias on Mondays beginning today, October 6, 2014.
Meatless Mondays was created by the U. S. government as a conservation measure during World War 1. In 2003 Johns Hopkins School of Public Health resurrected the campaign as a way to promote personal health. It is now a popular movement in many other countries. The campaign has been joined by Columbia and Syracuse Universities.
Students in Sarasota County schools can enjoy meals such as veggie pasta, hummus sandwiches, taco salads and more. Vegetarian dishes will be offered for students on other days as well if they choose.
