Punta Gorda, FL has a rich history. Settled in the mid 1800’s, it was a fishing and cattle port. Many of the merchant ships that arrived in the harbor took cattle to ports in Cuba. Others took fish and cattle to northern states. When the railroad arrived in Punta Gorda it changed the the city. A grand tourist hotel was built on the shores of Charlotte Harbor and well to do northerners and industrialists visited the city.
Farming and tourism remained important to the local economy and continues to this day. Enjoy this quaint city on Florida’s southwest coast and learn about its history.
