A study conducted by RealtyTrac analyzing Census population data between 2007 and 2013, found that Punta Gorda / Port Charlotte and Charlotte County were at the top of boomers retirees radar. This growth is due to the excellent values available in the area and the relaxing life-style. Active people can find others who enjoy the same pastimes such as sailing, boating, golf and fishing. There are also activities for those interested in arts and crafts and intellectual exercises. The Charlotte County Cultural Center is a popular center of activities. If it doesn’t involve snow, it can probably be found in Charlotte County.

Baby-boomers are generally moving from higher-priced to lower-priced markets when retiring. They are in general, moving from counties with a larger population to counties with a smaller population. In doing so, they are finding more home for the dollar as well as less automobile traffic.

The Florida Bar has decided to investigate probate and real estate laws with regard to same-sex couples. The bar created an eight member committee to in June to study the issue and how it will effect legally married same-sex couples who move to Florida.

Chairperson of the committee, West Palm Beach attorney Michael Gelfand said, ”Part of what we do is anticipate issues and make recommendations. This affects not only same-sex couples, but if you are acquiring property from a same-sex couple, you want to make sure the documentation is properly executed.”

A recent ruling declaring Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional may already be having effect. A Monroe County circuit judge issued the first decision striking down Florida’s same-sex marriage ban in July. It is imperative that these issues be addressed quickly to assure the civil rights of all citizens.

The committee is expected to issue a report in November.

• Charlotte Sports Park — The Charlotte Sports Park is the spring training facility for the 2008 American League Champion, Tampa Bay Rays.  It is also the home of the Rays single-A minor league affiliate, the Charlotte Stone Crabs. Located at 2300 El Jobean Road, this is a family friendly ball park that operates from February through September. Come in the early spring to watch the Rays prepare for another World Series run. When you get to the park for a spring training practice or game, you might even be able to get an autograph from your favorite Rays players (or the players on the visiting team). However, the fun doesn’t end once the Rays pack up and head north to St. Pete. Once spring training ends, the Stone Crabs bring fans to the ball park with their competitive, exciting play. This is your chance to see the future of the Rays  organization. While at a game you can grab a hot dog and soda, or a drink from the tiki hut bar in centerfield. You can also purchase souvenirs and memorabilia so that you can have something from your trip to the ball park. •  Port Charlotte Beach Park — Talk about things to do. There is SO much to do at the Port Charlotte Beach Park. Located at 4500 Harbor Boulevard, Port Charlotte Beach Park sits on the shores of Alligator Bay (don’t worry, it’s just a name!). For those who love the outdoors, this is the place to be. The Port Charlotte Beach Parks offers basketball/ tennis/ volleyball courts, BBQ grills, boating ramps, Bocce, Canoe/ Kayak, a dog park, loads of fishing areas, horseshoes, picnic shelters/ pavilion, a playground, a rec building, on-site restrooms, party room rentals, a swimming pool and beach access to the bay. This is such a great amenity for the residents of Port Charlotte, because it is so close to home and is very inexpensive. A friendly staff is there to make your experience memorable and enjoyable. You too, can be an owner of a home in Punta Gorda, FL! Prices are great and there are plenty of properties from which to choose. While many areas of Florida and around the country have suffered from foreclosures and short sale, and the Charlotte County area has had its share, Punta Gorda and Charlotte County, which includes Port Charlotte, Rotonda and South Gulf Cove has been hurt less than other areas.
